"South Park" Season 15 Finale: Joe Paterno walks into a police station...

How time flies. We've already hit the finale for the 15th season of "South Park," and it succeeded in going out on a much better note then it started off on.

The show followed up last week's not-so-topical early Thanksgiving and "Thor" fest with an equally random attack on atheists, poor people, Child Services, and the ever lovely Pabst Blue Ribbon.

To kick things off, Kenny was sent to a foster home after his parents were arrested. Apparently, whenever white trash and PBR mix, it ends up in disastrous results, especially for the children. Poor Kenny got swept through Child Services, before winding up in a foster home run by strict agnostics', who did everything possible to have all their foster kids keep an open mind and question everything. Drink of choice for the whole household: Dr. Pepper, because it's the most ambiguous of drinks, of course.

Cartman, who realized that with Kenny gone he is now the poorest kid in school, decided he would be better off with Child Services too. After sitting his mom down for a priceless exchange between the two of them over family finances, he framed her with a meth lab so he could enjoy the finer things in life with a foster family. Hawaiian shirt in tow, the joke was on him as he ended up at the same foster family as Kenny. Cartman, never one to walk the line, ended up reporting his new mom and dad, and after some help from Mysterion, Kenny and Cartman returned to South Park elementary, and all was set right in the world.

The weakest area here was the thin thread of a story holding everything together. Nothing, aside from the ‘poor people' theme, united everything, and it was more an array of targets that were lined up haphazardly. The jokes were all funny, but were mostly small fish in the comedy ocean. Nobody but Matt Stone and Trey Parker could pull of PBR, athiests, and Penn State all at once though, so they do have that to their credit.

The best laughs came from Cartman and the Child Services agent trading one liners. It was interesting, given that the show usually refrains from more classic joke formulas (like the yo momma's so poor lines that Cartman hit home), but it worked well. With so many of them pointed at Penn State, it's a wonder why the show didn't just do an episode tackling the college head on instead of just one lining their way around it, but at least the show took a jab at itself when the Penn State jokes got a little tired.

While it was random and all over the place, it was still a solid episode, though not necessarily the most focused end to a season. Regardless, the show is in a much better place than when it broke for summer hiatus, and I'm less worried about its continued caliber. Nothing managed to top Lemmiwinks, but given that the show was just renewed into its 20th season, Matt and Trey have plenty of time to keep the laughs coming. And at least the dynamic duo seems to have found solid footing once again.

Is the show really in a better place now than after the summer hiatus? I would argue that the last episode before the break was probably the finest South Park episode in many years. It also would have been a much better season finale. Last nights episode was good, but it meandered too much for my taste....

Did you even watch the episode.... The family the kids were sent to were Agnostic's not atheists.

Noneya-Yup, you are right. I had to go back to my notes on the episode to double check-I had Agnostic written down and somewhere my wires got crossed-I think I had the United Atheist League and United Atheist Alliance on the brain. I've fixed it in the article as well, thanks for catching that and pointing it out.

Mike-I agree, I think the midseason episode would have been much better suited for a season finale-this week didn't really leave us with anything out of the norm(except Kenny dying, but that used to be the norm). I still wish I knew their whole thinking behind that episode, and why they didn't really change anything on the show after it.
