A new princess may be joining the Disney fold this weekend with the theatrical release of "The Princess and the Frog," but Rochester's Children's Theatre will celebrate one of the original fairy-tale heroines with its production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella," running December 12-13 and 19-20 at the Nazareth College Arts Center.
"Cinderella" is the first production in RCT's 19th season, and its official return to its home stage at the Nazareth Arts Center after playing at various locations on the Naz campus during the Arts Center's year-plus renovation. The show tells the familiar story of Cinderella, the poor peasant girl whose cruel treatment at the hands of her nasty stepmother and -sisters can't deter her pure spirit. After a little makeover courtesy her fairy godmother, she attends Prince Charming's royal ball and makes quite an impression before bolting to meet curfew, leaving behind only her glass slipper as the prince's means of tracking her down. Talk about famous footwear.
It all ends with a happily ever after, and kids can get their chance at recreating some of the story's signature moments with RCT's Cinderella's Enchanted Holiday Party, taking place at 3:30 p.m. at the Arts Center on Sunday, December 13. The event - a fundraiser for the company, Golisano Children's Hospital, Better Day Buddies, and Nazareth's School Performance Series - will feature crafts, dancing, photo opportunities with the cast, and more. Tickets to the party cost $10-$12.
This week "Cinderella" plays on Saturday at 2 & 7 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m., and returns next weekend for shows at 2 p.m. both days. Tickets cost $20-$25. Call 389-2170 or visit rochesterchildrenstheatre.org for more information.
