Natalie Cole. Elvis Costello. K.d. lang. Chris Botti. These are just a few of the big names that will be coming to town as part of the 2011 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, which will take over a good chunk of downtown June 10-18.
This year marks the 10th installment of the Rochester International Jazz Festival, which has blossomed into a cultural juggernaut. Last year's installment attracted more than 160,000 music fans, and this year's festival promises 285 concerts with more than 1000 musicians at 18 different venues. And it's not just jazz: genres include blues, Americana, pop/rock, funk, and even hip-hop. There is truly something for everyone, and many of the festival's concerts are free.
Inside you'll find City Newspaper's 2011 Jazz Fest Guide, which includes day-by-day schedules, brief bios on the festival musicians, and exclusive interviews with some of the festival's biggest names. For more jazz, make sure to check in to the City Newspaper Music Blog at rochestercitynewspaper.com, which will have daily concert reviews throughout the run of the festival.

For connoisseurs of R&B, the mid-1970's were almost too good to be true. Al Green, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder were reaching new heights. Then, out of nowhere, came a soul-shaking voice, soaring to the heavens on a...

Laughter precedes virtually everything that comes out of Black 47 founder-guitarist-singer Larry Kirwan's mouth. It's laughter full of self-deprecation; Kirwan frequently acts as if the band has gotten away with something by simply surviving...

I'm not saying that G. Love's career thus far has been one big detour, but with "Fixin' to Die," the man has finally sat down and made the record he always intended to make. And it's a straight-up, get-down, red-hot blues platter. Known for...

I think one person you are overlooking is Tia Fuller, we first heard of her in ROC with Tina Marie. then with vocalsit Whitney Marchelle at the African Jazz Festival aired on Channel 13 last year. She formely played with Beyonce and several big bands with a album that went number on the jazz charts. This sister of Jazz roots will be performing June 10th.

We went to the Jam last night and OMG we heard Whitney Marchelle for the first time...I'm telling you this lady rocked the house on A-train, scatting, with soul and had us clapping and having a great time...she was amazing!!! Then John Nugent came up and kpt us swinging with Giant Steps then Grace kelly Came up...what A night. We are hearing alot of the real jazz at the jam..can you believe it.
Night be fore last one of your reporters said it was a better moment of what was going on out side when one of the groups was doing some improvisation at the hotel then the jam. There were some great musical moments of jazz happening at the same time and that statement I feel puts a damper about What Jazz Is all about over all...this is not our jazz attitude..please tell your reporter to get educated about the attitude of jazz.....a moment of jazz improvisation is never relived no matter the venue or time..and can happen difeerent ways at the same time.
