Dennis Mackrel was ready at the age of 19. He moved to New York City and landed a job playing drums in the pit band for "A Chorus Line." He then became the youngest member of the Count Basie Orchestra and the last drummer hired by Basie himself. A phenomenal drummer, he went on to play with Lionel Hampton, Hank Jones, Carla Bley, and many others. In 2010 he became the leader of the Basie Orchestra. Tuesday night Mackrel brings his years of big-band experience to the stage of Kilbourn Hall as special guest with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Bill Dobbins.
Mackrel performs with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble Tuesday, February 14, 8 p.m. at Kilbourn Hall, 26 Gibbs St. Free. 274-1100, esm.rochester.edu.
