Thee Oh Sees played a blistering set to a packed and seething crowd Monday night at the Bug Jar. People had been raving to me about this band all week and now I see why. Goddamn, this was a rock 'n' roll show! This San Francisco band is dynamite and outta site, wild and frenetic. It was as if virtually my entire record collection mated and mutated into a singular sweaty expression.
It was predominantly revved up garage rock, but the echo-plexed vocals gave a nod to Mr. Phillips, while the band --- two guitarists, two drummers, and a keyboardist (who picked up some of the bottom end) --- sent a salute to Mr. Spector. Front man John Dwyer was a man possessed, shouldering his drop-tuned, 12-string guitar like a rifle, and singing with a vocal attack a la Lux Interior, Jon Spencer, and Linda Lovelace. The sound was noisy in spots as the chaos frequently reared its head, but it was totally appropriate. It was sinister and ferocious and fun. You know, they used to call this the devil's music. I think they can start calling it that again.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked the show.
