It seems I'm starting to feel my age. Sure, I'm freshly done with college, and I hurt a little more than I used to if I get trampled at a concert. But I'm talking the opposite: I feel young. Not many bands are still kicking after 20-plus years, but Little Feat as a band is older than I am - a true rock and roll band from an era I missed, and unless someone finally pegs time travel, will never see.
Rochester based Tinted Image opened Thursday's show at Water Street Music Hall with its piano-based acoustic pop stylings. Lead singer, keyboardist, and former "American Idol" contestant Alyssa Coco led the group with her smooth vocals. She sang almost cabaret-like jazz floating overtop the more laid back, coffeehouse vibes of the musical underworkings put forward by the acoustic guitar, congas, and drum set. It was little too pop-leaning for my tastes, but guitarist Matt Merritt switched from his acoustic to a ripping electric solo at one point to rev things up.
Little Feat's set was full of good ol' heartfelt rock and roll, the kind they just don't make anymore. It was infused with a little bit of funk and south-of-the-border twang to mix things up and keep those ears guessing.
The band brought out the mandolin for a few tunes, including a newer one that was one of my favorites of the bunch. The members really shined when they let loose and the band opened up many of its songs for jam and solo sections, including quite an impressive slap-bass solo by Kenny Gradney. All in all, it was a solid set of classic, authentic, rock and roll, and who can complain about that? Nobody with a pulse and two feet, that's for sure.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked the show.

Nice review, capturing the essence of Little Feat. Makes one believe in R&R again.

First time in over a decade I missed Feat in Rochester. Made up for it on NYE at the Fillmore in Maryland. To all my friends that I didn't see last nite, HOY HOY from your recently Dixied Chicken. And if you're going to Jamaica for Feat Camp 10, ROCK ON!!!!

I came to the concert from Cleveland on a date and really enjoyed both bands. My only complaint was that the sound of the voices of the Little Feat band were not adjusted right and seemed a bit distorted at times. Otherwise it was a rousing time and kept getting better as the night went on.
