At the age of 21, pianist Emmet Cohen is creating a buzz in the jazz world. A precocious talent, he recently finished third in the 2011 Thelonious Monk Piano Competition. His excellent first album is not going to quiet things down. Whether he is artfully reigniting a standard or playing one of his own compositions, Cohen comes across as a force of nature. A double-barreled player with two equally busy hands, his style swings and glistens in a manner that recalls Oscar Peterson. Among his well-chosen standards are superb arrangements of Cole Porter's "It's Alright With Me" and Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart's "Where Or When." His own tunes, notably "The Swarm," "Resentment (Without Reason)" and the title tune, indicate a compositional maturity on a par with his chops. Throughout the album Cohen is nicely supported by two veteran sidemen, Joe Sanders on bass and Rodney Green drums. While most of the disc is a trio outing, three tunes are greatly enhanced by the trumpet of Greg Gisbert.
