Police oversight committee meets; transparency still lacking

I continue to be troubled by the lack of transparency in the effort to review the police oversight system. I first called for greater transparency back in October when I happened to catch notice of an upcoming meeting in a City Council member's newsletter. That Council member, Matt Haag, said at the time that he'd look for ways to improve the notification process. Yet I've just found out that the oversight committee is meeting tonight (Monday, January 30) at 5:30 p.m. The only notice I received was on a list of upcoming meetings sent out every week by City Hall. And even then, the meeting was labeled a meeting of the Civilian Review Board. The CRB is different than the oversight committee. The committee is actually reviewing the entire oversight process, which includes the CRB. (For the record, City Hall sent out a revised list after I pointed out the difference.) Still, the whole thing doesn't have to fall to City Hall. The oversight committee is lead by City Council member Adam McFadden and Police Chief Jim Sheppard. Surely one of them could've had a press release sent out or called local media about tonight's meeting. I fail to see how the finished product of this committee will have any credibility with the public if the public is left out of the process. Tonight's meeting is in Council Chambers at City Hall, 30 Church Street.
