Despite the suspense and theatrics since Newt Gingrich won South Carolina, today's Florida primary probably won't tell us much. A week from now, it's likely that four candidates will still be competing for the Republican presidential nomination.
Mitt Romney is heavily favored to win, but Gingrich says he'll keep fighting until the Republican convention this summer. Ron Paul lives in a universe of his own, so there's no sense that he'll pull out, no matter how badly he does.
And Rick Santorum? If his competitor for the super-conservative vote were anybody but Gingrich, I'd bet that Santorum would end his campaign if he doesn't do well today. But Gingrich is so volatile, so unpredictable, that it could be simply a matter of time until his campaign blows up.
"Gingrich may have the will to keep fighting," Alexander Burns posted on Politico this morning, "but whether he's capable of keeping his cool, delivering a consistent message, and executing a long-shot plan to overtake Romney is an altogether different matter."
If Gingrich lets his emotions and his loopy ideas get the best of him, he may keep campaigning, but he won't have any money, and he won't get many votes.
And who'll be there to pick up his conservative followers?
Rick Santorum.
