The Republican circus: Santorum's in the center ring

Jiminy Christmas! For anyone hoping for an Obama victory in November, the Republican presidential competition is proving to be an awful lot of fun.

Yesterday, everybody seemed to think that Mitt Romney had the nomination locked up. The most the three other candidates could accomplish, everybody thought, was to tarnish Romney's reputation by staying in the race. But we woke up this morning to find that Rick Santorum won all three Republican contests yesterday. And now there are headlines like these:

"Santorum Delivers a GOP Stunner" (Wall Street Journal);

"Triple Victory for Santorum Again Upends GOP Presidential Race" (Washington Post);

"In Santorum's Sweep, Sign of GOP Unease with Romney" (New York Times);

"A Repudiation of the Ostensible Front-Runner" (Daily Beast);

"Romney Has Reason to Be Concerned" (National Review).

Primary and caucus results are risky things to use as an indicator of much of anything, given the low turnout. Still, they do give us a sense of where the passion lies in the most passionate of a party's voters. And clearly, Mitt Romney's not getting a lot of hugs from Republicans.

And I love the Romney campaign's reaction to the losses: that he's still going to be the nominee, and that after all, John McCain lost in 19 contests and went on to win the nomination.

Yesssss!

Continue to expect more of these serial posts on the Republican "circus" from Ms. Towler. It's become a tedious pattern now, an approach of ridicule and derision where a credible defense of of another term for Pres. Obama should occur, but lacks supporting data. These are the giggles of irrelevance, the kind that erupt when your hero promises a <5.8% unemployment rate to result from his $800 billion stimulus plan when in fact long term unemployment is now worse than it's been in 70 years, or when he hasn't passed a budget in over 1,000 days, or when 'smart diplomacy' has consistently alienated allies and empowered enemies. So continue to chuckle and play up the "Republican's are hilarious" meme. We know who the sad joke is really about.

Actually Santorum is in the Right Wing, the Far Right Wing to be exact.

And tell your other commenters that many do not consider Republicans to be hilarious.....

... We consider them to be dangerous.

"'[S]mart diplomacy' has consistently alienated allies and empowered enemies." - that would be George W. Bush, you know, The One Who Cannot Be Mentioned on the GOP Campaign Trail. The one who was Osama bin Laden's dream come true. And take a look at Reagan's unemployment numbers. Obama has done a pretty decent job of extracting us from the Bush Catastrophe.

The Onion got it right on January 20, 2001: "Our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."
