There are lots of places where you can get good Italian food in Rochester, but only select restaurants in the area make their pastas from scratch - a difficult and time-consuming culinary art that pays off in both flavor and texture. That is why owner and executive chef Joe McCall puts an emphasis on serving homemade pastas, keeping the menu clean and simple. The signature dish is the homemade gnocchi, served with roasted plum-tomato sauce, fresh basil, and shaved parmesan. McCall also offers some more complex flavors, including homemade pappardelle Bolognese (wide, flat fettucine covered in a veal-tomato sauce), veal saltimbocca (with escarole, prosciutto, and Madeira wine), and lobster ravioli. In addition, Joey's offers five varieties of salads (from Caesar to wedge), appetizers (including calamari scampi and clams vongole), and entrees from the grill like the 16-ounce strip steak (with mushroom compote) or the filet mignon (with gorgonzola and white truffle oil). The restaurant is in the space formerly occupied by the casual restaurant JC's Backyard BBQ, renovated to create a lush, warm atmosphere that has both the welcoming quality of a neighborhood joint and the style of a chic city restaurant.

Food was wonderful. We had a long wait (because it was very busy and we didn't have a reservation) but the wait was well worth it. The pasta was tasty, the sauce spectacular! Can't wait to go back.

My partner and I went to Joey's on October 1st. We each had the lobster bisque which we both enjoyed immensely. It was clearly the best we had in a long time. The soup was loaded with lobster and had a nice balance. For the main course I had the chicken marsala while he had the veal scallopine.

The Chicken Marsala was great - had the perfect mix of spinach, mushrooms and chicken with a tasty marsala sauce which was not too sweet. My partner mentioned that the scallopine was very good - so good in fact the he used bread to sop up the remaining sauce on the plate.

The only thing stopping a 5 star rating was the side of ziti. The ziti was cooked perfectly, but the tomato sauce was waterly and bland. We asked for cheese and the waitress brought over what appeared and tasted like Kraft Parmesan cheese - even the Macaroni Grill serves fresh grated parmesan.

The wait staff was prompt and attentive, the maitre'd was friendly. In fact since we had a reservation we did not have to wait long. All in all I would try it again.

I agree that the food is good, however, I found the menu to be the duplicate of Bacco Restaurant on Park, and not quite as good. My beef, however, is not with the food but overall management and service. We arrived well before our appointed reservation in order to have a cocktail at the bar. When we checked in with the maitre'd, we were informed that we would need to be seated as soon as our entire party arrived because they were busy. I informed them that we arrived early to have a cocktail, but was told our table would be given away if we didn't sit when we were told. It then took us over 10 minutes to get a drink at the bar. From then on we really felt rushed throughout the whole dining experience. What I really found presumptious was that a 20% tip was automatically added to the bill and we were only a party of 6. To add insult to injury, the tip was calculated on the total bill INCLUDING THE TAX.
